  • Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez earned a BA in communication studies and a minor in political science from UNLV and a MA in public communication from American University.

Jennifer, a McNair Scholar, participated in NEW Leadership Nevada in 2004 and the National Hispana Leadeship Institute’s “Latinas Learning to Lead” in 2003. She served as the Vice President of the Public Relations Student Society of America, is a member of the Latino Youth Leadership Alumni association. In 2004 López and some of her closest friends, including fellow NEW Leadership participants Maria Luisa Parra-Sandoval and Evelyn Garcia-Morales, founded Kappa Delta Chi, Sorority Inc., the first Latina community service based sorority in Nevada. The sorority continues to thrive today.

After interning on Capitol Hill for Senator Harry Reid in his office of communications, she was promoted to Nevada Deputy Press Secretary. Jennifer moved on to political campaign work. But, before she did, she had the pleasure of overseeing the internship experience of Maria Luisa Parra Sandoval, a fellow NEWL alumnae. Upon leaving the Capitol, Jennifer was instrumental in orchestrating the Get Out the Vote grassroots campaign in Nevada.

These activities won her the notice of Organizing for America, Barrack Obama’s presidential campaign, in 2008. She served as Nevada Deputy Political Director (2008) then as Nevada State Director (2009-2010) — a great and well deserved honor.

Years after meeting her mentor, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, at the NEWL Nevada Keynote Dinner in 2004, she became the Public Information Officer for the Attorney General’s Office.

Jennifer aspires to continue working in government affairs on the state and national level and perhaps one day become a professor.

She is half Colombian and half Nicaraguan, enjoys volunteering, running, photography, dancing, spending time with her husband, Ricky Gourrier, and playing with their dog, Junior.

Jennifer remains a passionate supporter of NEW Leadership Nevada, dedicating her time to workshops and panels by serving as a speaker for the recent 2011 class.
