  • Carmel Viado

Carmel Viado currently works as the administrative secretary for the Department of Building and Safety in the City of Las Vegas. She is also a senior at UNLV and plans to graduate in December 2012.

She is the Vice Chair of the Building and Safety Diversity Committee, a position she has held concurrently with Deputy City Clerk. She also represents the department in the City of Las Vegas’ Employee Engagement Committee.

Her goals include earning her degree and learning the skills to join the executive ranks in the City of Las Vegas. She wants to encourage, mentor, and be in a position to create avenues for other young women to achieve their own professional goals.

The City of Las Vegas works with the Clark County School District in providing job experience to high school students through internships with the City’s departments – allowing her to work very closely with young minority woman. Carmel hopes to inspire others with what she has accomplished as a minority woman in a male-dominated construction industry.

During and after NEW Leadership Nevada, she plans to develop outreach and educational programs to improve the Building and Safety Department’s efforts to address safety, energy efficiency, water conservation, and sustainability in the built environment.

Educating the community, as well as NEWL participants, will encourage sustainable development. Understanding building code will also support the adaptive reuse of existing structures, something particularly important in a town known for imploding buildings rather than preserving potentially historic sites – a motivating interest for Carmel.

Carmel Viado graduated from the first ever for-credit version of the NEW Leadership Nevada program in 2012.

*In the following videos, Carmel describes her “Community Project.” As part of the NEW Leadership course, students designed proposals and promoted a community service project.
